European TapestriesMany artistic movements have originated in Europe that always has been budding ground for iconic artists. In addition the combination of diverse culture with the multitude of great artists has also helped the artistic renaissance in the continent. One of the features of artistic excellence has been the beautiful hand woven European tapestries with their origin dating back to the 13th century A.D.

One of the major uses of these tapestries was for preaching religion in distant countries besides promoting arts. Usually the tapestry movements are associated with royalty as well as aristocracy. After a battle was won, it was usual custom to exchange the tapestries. That is exactly why the European tapestries are associated with history and heritage.

Normally woven with silk and gold treads and reflecting the exclusivity as well as the grandiose of status, tapestries experienced a major change with the invention of Jacquard loom in the beginning of 19th century that brought use of tapestries within the reach and affordability of common men. At the same time it also created a wider market for the tapestries.

One downside of the entire process was that European tapestry were no more hand woven and the beautiful products of the past started disappearing from the market. On the plus side of the use of looms instead of hand weaving for creating these tapestries rendered them much more affordable and they were no more the exclusive object for the wealthy classes as they were no more as expensive as in the past.
